From passport validity to unscented toiletries, here are the practical details that make the difference on your first Umrah.
Preparing well is part of the worship. The pilgrims who arrive calm and confident are almost always the ones who spent time on the small practical details before leaving home.
Start with your passport. It must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date, and you will need recent photographs against a white background for the visa application. Check both well before you plan to travel, because renewals take time.
Pack unscented toiletries. While in the state of ihram, perfumed soap, shampoo and deodorant are not permitted, and unscented alternatives are easier to buy at home than to find on arrival.
Bring comfortable, broken-in footwear. You will walk a great deal, often on marble that becomes warm during the day. Sandals that can be slipped on and off easily are a practical choice around the Haramain.
Carry your medication in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription, and tell your coordinator about any medical condition before departure so support can be arranged discreetly.
Learn the rites before you go. Attend the pre-departure orientation, read through the sequence of tawaf and sa'i, and memorise the supplications you would like to make. Knowing what comes next lets you stay present rather than anxious.
Finally, travel light. A smaller bag is easier to manage through airports and hotel transfers, and you will want room for the water and dates you bring home.
